Prof. Dr. med. Michael Baudis
Area of Research
Description of Research Interest
My main research interests are connected to mutation patterns in cancer and the development of data structures, resources and utilities for the exchange and analysis of genome data for research and medical applications.
Part of our work is in the curation of cancer genome resources, with emphasis on structural variations. Our Progenetix repository is the largest, freely accessible cancer CNV database and provides resources for data access, analyses of the research landscape and the mapping of genomic and associated data. My group has contributed in a variety of disease-specific collaborative studies, for instance in aggressive childhood brain tumors, neuroblastomas and hematologic neoplasias.
As part of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) leadership, I am guiding the development of genomic data standards, particularly as a co-lead of the "Beacon" protocol. In the Swiss context, I am shaping research in bioinformatics (SIB) and personalised medicine. Additional to my primary research I am involved in activities promoting Open Research Data concepts - at UZH and through the Swiss Academies - and am also interested to shape the public discourse about risks and opportunities of genome data sharing.
