Description of Research Interest

BBS and her team have two clear research lines defined as perioperative damage control and repair mechanisms within the topic of organ protection and blood purification with magnetic nanoparticles within nanomedicine. BBS’s research activities mainly focus on organ protection with general anesthetics including basic, translational and clinical research. BBS has performed many clinical mainly randomized clinical trials as sponsor investigator. These clinical studies were designed based on findings from basic research of the lab of BBS, allowing the translation into clinical setting. With the continuous financial support of Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), she contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms of how volatile anesthetics provide protection and in which situations they are beneficial. Also, BBS and her team in interaction with material scientists designed and explored magnetic nanoparticles to remove small molecules as well as cells from the blood. Data from this interdisciplinary collaboration provided the ground for the spin-off ‘hemotune’ (https://www.hemotune.ch).
 

Special Expertise

Expertise of our research group is the knowledge of how to translate findings from the bench into a clinical scenario, further developing technologies and/or drugs. Particularly, the experience in the field of nanomedicine with magnetic nanoparticles has brought us very close to a clinical application.
